Sugar Fork Crossing’s Backpack Giveaway

During our Second Annual Backpack Giveaway event on July 26, 186 Madison County schoolchildren received backpacks, all filled with supplies needed to start the school year. Sugar Fork Crossing donated the remaining 32 backpacks to Frankton Elementary School, located in the northwestern area of the county.

Backpack GiveawaySFC resident Teddi Bohenkamp, a former long-time Anderson Community Schools board member, was one of more than 25 residents who volunteered to fill the backpacks in an assembly-line fashion and assist with the distribution. “It’s wonderful to see the joy in the children’s faces when they get to pick out their backpacks,” said Bohenkamp. “We have a lot of need here in Anderson. It’s great to know that we offered this gift to the community.”

While Sugar Fork Crossing purchased the backpacks and many of the supplies, several “care partners” donated funds and supplies as well, including Our Hospitality, HTS (Healthcare Therapy Services), Brighton Hospice, and 1925 Pub. Each backpack contained a spiral notebook, crayons, scissors, colored pencils, glue sticks, folders, dry erase markers, a composition book and hand sanitizer. Also Nurse Practitioner Bryon Miller with Alteon Health provided free sports physicals during the event.

The calendar says summer, but the start of school is just around the corner. That means school supplies shopping for many parents of the greater Madison County area. At Sugar Fork Crossing, we are coming together to make a difference in the lives of the many families who need support by giving away backpacks full of school supplies. We couldn’t have done it alone however.  A big “thank you” is needed for our donors who make this generous gift possible.

Each and every dollar they contributed is helping folks who need a little economic support with school right around the corner.
